Changes at Pall-Ex (UK) Ltd

As you know we have been members of the Pall-Ex pallet network since December 2002. During this time Pallex have always strived to move on, improve services and remain at the forefront of developments in their field. Using the network reduces our carbon footprint by 20% which is in itself good but also keeps our prices down. Pallex CEO Hilary Devey (once of Dragons Den and the Secret Millionaire) has employed the services of Kevin Buchanan and Sue Hodgson and at the National Pallex Members meeting in February they set out their vision for the future of Pallex which is very exciting. Some things have already improved but over the next 12 months they fully intend to put the 'pedal to the metal' (pun fully intended!) and drive Pallex to the top of the network league where they belong. This will involve bringing in new members to difficult areas, better brand awareness and state of the art IT systems, especially track and trace and real time signature capture.

In memory of Trevor Matthews

On August 15th 2014 Trevor Matthews, co founder of Matthews Haulage Ltd, died after an all too short battle against cancer. The Company was incorporated as T.S.Matthews Motor Engineers Ltd in June 1975 and was renamed Matthews Haulage Ltd shortly after Nick Matthews joined Trevor and the company started to concentrate more on transport. Trevor may have been small in stature but he was big in every other way and not a person to rub up the wrong way! The best way to describe him is 'hard but fair' and many an employee, past and present, can vouch for both those qualities. He was always willing to put the company's and other peoples interests above his own whenever it was necessary. Never afraid to get his hands dirty he would regularly be seen dashing from his chair to change a tyre or repair a truck in the course of his duties as a '3M'. He and Josh were the 'magnificent maintenance men' (hence 3M) in case you are wondering. He would also jump on a fork lift truck to help load/unload and often be re-wrapping badly prepared customers pallets to exacting standards whilst partaking in jovial banter with anyone passing! A true team player and an inspirational motivation to us all, leading by example and never accepting defeat. You are very sadly missed by all at Matthews Haulage Ltd.

Trevor leaves behind Carol, his wife of 36 years, son Adam and daughter Amy as well as the legacy of Matthews Haulage Ltd that will live on in his honour.

Nick, Carol and all the Matthews family would like to pass on their extreme thanks to Customers, Suppliers, friends and all employees, past and present, who either attended the funeral or have passed on their condolences. RIP Trev xx.

New member of staff

We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to Lissa our new accounts/payroll administrator. She comes with a wealth of experience in these fields and the high level of attention to detail required by Matthews Haulage Ltd. She has already started picking up the other systems such as Stirling Solutions (our traffic software) and Twine the Pallex IT system. We are sure you will enjoy dealing with her and will find her as amenable and pleasant as we do.

Carers Trust Charity Donations

A brilliant scheme devised by Pallex CEO and television entrenpreneur Hilary Devey ensures that for every pallet sent through the Pallex network one penny is donated to the Carers Trust, whose President is HRH The Princess Royal. The total raised so far is in excess of £150,000 (you do the maths). 'The Carers Trust carries out vital work across the UK and it is a privilage to be in a position where we can donate such a large amount of money' said Hilary, who is vice President. So please feel happy in the thought that next time we send one of your pallets through the network it adds funds to this very worthwhile charity!

Membership of FORS

2011 saw our accreditation to membership of the prestigious Freight Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS). This is operated by Transport for London and provides both a quality and performance benchmark for the freight industry and is part of the wider London Freight Plan. As well as legal compliance members must demonstrate their commitment to Health and Safety, managing work related road risks and improving efficiency. They are currently focusing on the safety and protection of pedal cyclists.
